Creating a custom dyed and painted Apron
In this project, I needed to dye an apron, and hat, then airbrush it. The theme was cool, native american, with faded pink. I will show you with pictures how the project started and finished, to the right is the finished piece.
Here we have a blank apron, from Joann Fabrics, the apron cost me $5 which is alright concerning it was a gift. If you have more time I suggest you buy them online. I also bought a chefs hat for $5.
I proceeded to take these tubs from Lowe’s and use them instead of a sink. I bought RIT dye at Joann Fabrics. I got the scarlett red. Do yourself a favor and dont just expect every grocery store has this. I made a mistake and tried 6 stores here in Boston. Apparently no one sells this stuff anymore unless its the black color.
Instead of being very careful about temperatures and amounts of dye, I decided to be very loose with the mixture because I needed a faded red I had the leeway. I used 3 big pots of hot water from the faucet. I stirred the garments for 10 minutes then occasionally stirred over the course of 90 minutes.
Since I did not have many tools for dying things, and I did not have a stainless steel sink, I used a means of different buckets and plastic bags so I did not stain my sink. I cut a hole at the bottom of this old navy bag, so I could rinse out the dye. I then proceeded to wash the clothing in my washing machine then I used my dryer.
Here is the tricky part. The design came from a personal appreciation for native american art. I came up with the font I wanted to use and I cut custom stencils to reflect the design Ideas I want. I like to do less documentation on the art techniques since that is more of a learned skill. Although if you have any questions on how I painted this feel free to contact me. I hope you like this project.
